For years now, PCF has helped out Emlen Elementary during their Parent Orientation day at the beginning of the year and their Students Play Day held just before summer break.
Both events involve cooking a massive number of hotdogs…like 450 of them for each gig!
PCF is lucky to be able to recruit neighbor volunteers for these events. “Henny” and “Rick” both have helped us with these events. In fact, Henny brings her griddle each time, greatly simplifying the cooking process. In the past, PCF would drag several charcoal Weber cookers to the school but the gas powered grill has certainly made the process a great deal easier. On top of that, she brings large tubs of pre-sliced peppers and onions as condiments for the adults.
We always have a great time during these events and it is always a lot of fun to see the kids outside of the classroom and relaxed with their friends. One highlight was Principal Thomas being the cake throwing target for the last few years. Students can use up one of their event tickets to throw a large helping of whipped cream at their Principal. Not sure how many Principals would sign up for this but if you know Ms. Thomas, you’d understand. She, and the rest of her staff, are the reason we remain so committed to help them Emlen Elementary to the extent that we can!

- PCF’s Director Jan and Henny will cook 450 or more hot dogs in a day!
- Henny brings her own sliced onions and peppers as condiments for the adults.
- Kids always enjoy the day. They come in waves as their yard time is timed by age/grade.

- PCF’s Jan Deruiter, Principal Thomas and staff member Mr. Ray.
- Ms. Thomas allows students to splat her with whipped cream.
- Not sure how many Principals would volunteer for this…
- ..but this is why we love Ms. Thomas and her staff at Emlen.
